Does a keyword have to match the start of a word?
No. AppView looks for your keyword anywhere in the extension’s title, including the middle or the end of a word. Upper and lower case are treated the same, and only the title is searched, not the description.
Short keywords catch more than you might expect: “ai” also matches Gmail and Email. If you get too many unrelated results, use a longer keyword such as “educ” or “medic”, or exclude the extra words (see below).
Do I need to list plurals and other word forms?
Usually not, if you search for the shortest part the forms share. Search doesn’t know grammar: it only checks whether your exact letters appear in the title. A short keyword is contained in its longer forms, but a long keyword is never contained in a shorter form.
The same rule works for any word: type the short stem, not the full form.
| Keyword you type | Also finds | Misses |
|---|---|---|
| translatCovers every form | TranslateTranslatorTranslation | — |
| translator | Translator | TranslateTranslation |
| photoCovers every form | PhotoPhotosPhotography | — |
| photos | Photos | PhotoPhotography |
Forms that change the spelling of the root don’t share a common part. Add each one as its own keyword and keep the mode on Any: for example fly and flew, or mouse and mice.
What happens when a keyword has a space in it?
A space doesn’t split a keyword, so “pdf editor” is searched as one phrase: those letters, in that order, with one space between them.
To find titles that contain both words in any order, add them as two keywords (press Enter or type a comma after each) and switch the mode to All.
Should I use Any or All?
Any shows titles that contain at least one of your keywords (OR). All shows only titles that contain every keyword (AND).
How do I exclude words?
Start a keyword with a minus. A title is hidden if it contains any of the excluded words, in both modes.
Exclusions follow the same matching as keywords, so they also hit the middle of words: “−free” hides “Carefree Notes” too. A word can’t be in the search and the exclusions at the same time, because that would always return nothing. All other filters on the page (users, rating, category and so on) apply on top of the title search.
How do I search by title in AppView?
- Open Advanced search and find the Title keywords field.
- Type a keyword and press Enter, Tab or a comma to add it. Start it with a minus to make it an exclusion.
- Pick Any or All next to the field.
- Press Search. The field doesn’t search on its own, so you can add several keywords first.
You can also paste a list such as “pdf, editor, -trial”: it is split on commas, semicolons, tabs and new lines. The How it works link under the field shows the same rules with examples.
What are the limits?
| Rule | Value |
|---|---|
| Keyword length | 2 to 30 characters |
| Keywords per search | up to 5 |
| Exclusions per search | up to 5, counted separately |
| Case | ignored |
| Duplicates | the same word twice (any case) is added once |
| Symbols | % and _ are searched as ordinary characters |
